The factory of our memory

The Museum of Alcalá de Guadaíra opened its doors on November 11, 2005The company was founded in the early years of the 20th century under the name of Martí y Gutiérrez, from the refurbishment and adaptation of a warehouse of the former Idogra factory, dedicated to the production of olive products.

It is integrated into a renovated civic environment, where together with the reused factory spaces, the industrial space is transformed into an urban park, nowadays reconverted into one of the focal points of the social and cultural life of Alcalá.

From the beginning, the concept of creating a highly dynamic space in its programming was clear. For this reason, the temporary exhibitions -on the upper floor-, dedicated to the most singular artistic manifestations of our environment, alternate with the permanent tour -ground floor- that pays homage to the main Sevillian landscape painters who formed the School of Alcalá, between 1850 and 1950. This exhibition is entitled
Tiempo de Paisajes (Landscape Time).

In this way, the museum fulfills a function of reinforcement of our collective identity, generating social cohesion, so important in a city like Alcalá de Guadaíra.

Landscape Time

In the year that the Museum came of age, it underwent a complete transformation of its space to house the exhibition LANDSCAPE TIME. Painters of the School of Alcalá, 1850 – 1950.

The exhibition includes works by leading Sevillian landscape painters such as Emilio Sánchez Perrier, José Jiménez Aranda, Manuel García Rodríguez, José Pinelo Llull, Nicolás Alpériz, José Arpa, etc.

For more than two centuries, the natural and urban environment of Alcalá de Guadaíra has been the focus of countless artistic gazes, which still endure and are renewed.

Dozens of painters eager for inspiration or, at least, for suggestive icons established their temporary or permanent residence in the village.

In a continuous coming and going of carriages or the “bakers’ train”, the triangle composed of castle, bridge and hermitage became a magnetic pole for pleinairists, who spread out their easels along the beautiful adjoining vertices: the banks, the orchards, the Guadaíra’s azudas, the Oromana paths…

This is how Alcalá was profiled in an open-air workshop. Oscillating between tradition and hints of modernity -and always guided by the common denominator of landscape-, these works were warmly received in the art market.

They soon crossed provincial borders and traveled through Europe, carried by English and French travelers; or through America, by the hand of the painter and art dealer José Pinelo.

Over time, they became part of the collections of prestigious museums -see the Prado or the Thyssen-or other public institutions, as is now the case of the Museum of Alcalá de Guadaíra, where we can enjoy them in this new collection.

Museum and School

A painting exhibition goes beyond contemplation. It is the excuse to address an infinite number of topics.

Tiempo de Paisajes allows us to enjoy the beauty of the local landscapes, but also allows us to reflect on the importance of taking care of our environment. We can talk about the factors that made Alcalá one of the favorite destinations of romantic writers and artists.

There is room to talk about the difficult path of women in art, or how a train brought much more than passengers to our city. We can meet Emilio Sánchez Perrier, Manuel García Rodríguez, we can meet José Pinelo, who made it possible for Alcalá’s landscapes to travel to America and end up in great museums and public and private collections around the world.

All this under the premise of dialogue, to have a good time in a museum, and to always want to come back.
